Mobile Marketing Your Business

Have you wondered how viable mobile marketing is these days? Here are some statistics via mobithinking.com:

  • As of January 2012, there are 6 billion cellular subscriptions worldwide.
  • Of that number, 1.2 billion have active mobile broadband subscriptions (smartphones), which accounts for the fastest growing segment of cell phones.
  • More than 350 million users access Facebook through their mobile devices.
  • In 2011 85% of all phones will be able to access the internet
  • 8 trillion text messages were sent in 2011!

8 trillion text messages! Wow! And that number is higher than the year before, as has been the trend since the beginning of text messages. Statistics show that 98 percent of text messages are read, with 90 percent of them read in the first three minutes of being received (sms text marketing.com). This is a much higher read rate than emails or direct mail.

Aside the popularity of text messaging, this difference is also likely because people can check them anywhere as they come. Not every phone can check email, and the typical person can’t check their physical mail until they get home later in the day. At that point it can be overwhelming to go through it all. Almost all phones, however, can receive texts.

Properly done text marketing—staying within FCC guidelines—involves a 100 percent opt-in system. This is unlike email, where anyone that knows your address can add you to their list and spam you. This is also one of the reasons email read rate is lower. With texting, a user must deliberately opt-in to receive a business’ texts, and can opt-out at any time. The ability to change your mind and opt-out is key, and usually happens immediately.
